The Wilderness Society's Environment Award for Children’s Literature was set up to help promote a sense of caring and responsibility for nature through quality Australian children's books. The rationale for the Environment Award is to create positive attitudes towards and understanding of, the natural environment. Childhood is a time when most attitudes are formed. A good story can help children become receptive to a book's inherent values. The Environment Award encourages writers and illustrators who create books with environmental values.

2009 Environment Award for Children's Literature Winners
True Green Kids: 100 Things You Can Do to Save the Planet by Kim McKay and Jenny Bonnin (published by ABC Books) features 100 simple solutions to the environmental challenges facing kids today. The Wilderness Society commended the fun and easy ways the book shows kids how to make a difference to our environment such as planting an organic garden and calculating a family's/ school's carbon footprint.
Tuart Dwellers by Jan Ramage, with gorgeous illustrations Ellen Hickman, was published by the WADepartment of Environment and Conservation. This thoughtful pictorial celebrates the diversity, colour and ingenuity of the natural world. Young readers will enjoy tales about how a Crab Spider goes shopping and a Jewel Beetle becomes a seedpod. Tuart Dwellers was also short listed for the Children's Book Council of Australia - Eve Pownall Award and listed as an "Honour Book" in the Picture Book of the year Notable Books category.
Both True Green Kids: 100 Things You Can Do to Save the Planet and Tuart Dwellers promote environmental values and sense of caring and responsibility for the environment.

Illustrations Gillian Warden & Liz Kemp HarperCollins Publishers Australia - This is the true story of David and his father, who came to Stephens Island - a remote and pristine island off Cook Strait between the North and South Islands of New Zealand in 1894. There they built a lighthouse to protect ships entering the strait. Oblivious of the potential damage to the environment, they chopped down the trees and ferns where the local birds sheltered, thereby demolishing their habitat. But worse than that, they brought their pregnant cat with them. The tiny Stephens Island wrens, being flightless, had no natural defences against the predators and were wiped out in less than two years. The event is cited as the only instance where one species has been directly responsible for the extinction of another. About the Author
