Poets Union
Twenty years after forming in Melbourne in August 1977, the Poets Union is a vital and dynamic organisation. Not only is poetry being read, but sung, shouted, danced, painted and carved in stone. Poetry now has as many faces and as many voices as there are personalities. The Poets Union has membership of more than 600 and expanding.

The Poets Union revitalised Australian poetry with a new attitude to one of the oldest of all artforms. Poetry was taken off the dusty bottom shelf and into the streets, read in pubs, cafès and parks, and found new shapes and sounds to reflect the changing world.

Their primary purpose is to encourage and develop opportunities for poets and contemporary poetry in Australia particularly their members. Run by volunteers and a part-time employee, they are motivated to bring the love for words and ideas to the outside world. They organise readings, workshops, tours, and festivals all round the country. The Poets Union is currently supported by the Australia Council, the NSW Ministry for the Arts, and Sydney City Council.

Sisters in Crime Australia
Sisters in Crime is Australia's fastest growing literary society and, arguably, also its fastest growing women's organisation. It was launched at the Feminist Book Festival in Melbourne in September 1991 and grew out of a shared interest in women's crime and mystery fiction. It was inspired by the American organisation of the same name, which was initiated by Sara Paretsky (creator of Chicago PI VI Warshawski) and other women crime writers in 1986.

Some Sisters are writers, publishers, students, academics and booksellers, but most are simply enthusiastic, if not obsessive, readers. Sisters in Crime Australia has over 500 members and plays an active role in promoting women's crime fiction and in correcting the imbalance in the treatment of women writers in the field.

Sisters in Crime Australia publishes a national newsletter and meets in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, Canberra, Launceston and Brisbane. The Melbourne chapter hosts a variety of regular events ? discussion meetings, guest speakers, murder mystery days, quiz nights ? and also participates in the Melbourne and St Kilda Writers' Festivals.
