The Nile -Australia's Largest Online Bookstore Bilby stands for Books I Love Best Yearly. The Bilby Awards are Queensland's children's choice awards. They are run by the Children's Book Council of Australia (Queensland Branch).

At the beginning of each year, students in Queensland schools are asked to enter the name of their favourite book. They are not limited in any way, except winners from the previous two years are not eligible. A shortlist is developed from the entries. These are published as lists covering three levels of reading maturity: Older Readers (12 years and older); Younger Readers (9 to 11 years)and Early Readers (8 years and younger).

Students are then asked to read titles from the list, and to vote for the one book that they "love the best".

Once the final votes have been counted, BILBY prize winners are announced in September on International Literacy Day.

Young readers are introduced to the cuddly yet slow-moving Australian wombat in this tongue-in-cheek account of one unusually articulate wombat and his busy week. Full color.diary_of_a_wombat

From The Publisher:

Wombats are cuddly-looking, slow-moving Australian animals. Their favorite activities are eating, sleeping, and digging holes. Here, in the words of one unusually articulate wombat, is the tongue-in-cheek account of a busy week; eating, sleeping, digging holes . . . and training its new neighbors, a family of humans, to produce treats on demand. This entertaining book, with its brief, humorous text and hilarious illustrations, will endear the wombat to young children, who may recognize in the french_jackiedetermined furry creature some qualities that they share.

Biography

Jackie French's writing career spans 17 years, 48 wombats, 132 books, 23 languages,3,721 bush rats, over 50 awards in Australia and overseas, 6 possibly insane lyrebirds, assorted 'Burke's Backyard' segments, radio shows, newspaper and magazine columns, theories of pest and weed ecology and 27 shredded back doormats. The doormats are the victims of the wombats who require constant appeasement in the form of carrots, rolled oats and wombat nuts, which is one of the reasons for her prolific output: it pays the carrot bills.
Jackie wrote her first children's book `Rainstones' in a desperate attempt to earn $106.40 to register her car, while living in a shed with a wallaby called Fred, a black snake called Gladys and a wombat called Smudge. It was described by the editor at HarperCollins as the messiest, worst spelt manuscript they'd ever received - more from Jackie French's lovely website

Winner: Early Reader: Ugly Fish: by Kara LaReau, illus by Scott Magoon

Ugly Fish is ugly and big and mean, and he won't share his driftwood tunnel or his special briny flakes with anyone. And that means the wimpy little fish who keep showing up in his tank have "got to go." But then one day someone bigger and uglier and maybe even meaner arrives . . . and suddenly Ugly Fish isn't feeling "quite" so confident anymore.

From Kara LaReau, author of the Rocko and Spanky series, here is an irreverent and terrifically funny book about a bully who at last gets his come uppance. Authors home page

Winner: Younger Reader: The Cat on the Mat is Flat by Andy Griffiths ( illus by Terry Denton Link to Teachers Notes

Praise for The Cat on the Mat is Flat:

“Imagine the outcome if Dr. Seuss, Dav Pilkey, and Lane Smith were locked in a room until they came up with a book for beginning or reluctant readers. These nine rhyming stories have action galore, plenty of dialogue, and ample pen-and-ink illustrations, all wrapped up in humor . . . Even young people who are struggling to get the hang of reading may happily handle all 176 crazy pages.” —School Library Journal

“Griffiths’s innovative book for beginning readers collects nine short, intentionally silly snippets propelled by kid-pleasing, tongue-tripping verse . . . Denton’s edgy, stick-figure-filled sketches enhance the zaniness factor and the offbeat, ironic humor.” —Publishers Weekly

Overnight his simple life is shattered and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic and power. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders?
