# The sections are: Picture Story Books
# Fiction for Younger Readers
# Fiction for Older Readers
# Fiction for Years 7 to 9
Each year: Children nominate Australian children's fiction books that have been published in the last ten years to create a short list. Children vote for their favourite books by a specified date in October, (usually International Children's Day). The winners are announced at the award ceremony where authors and illustrators receive YABBA citations presented by children.
A brief look down the lists below reveals the gorgeous titles that have won over the years. With four children 7 and under it pretty much reflects our library! KJP.

May 9th- Just love the YABBA's! Each year students from across Victoria, New South Wales, ACT and NT (just joined-up) nominate their most loved books onto the Children’s Choice Book Awards Shortlist. In terms two and three, students will read these and other Australian fiction titles and in term four cast a vote for their favourite.
It will be fascinating to see which of the many gorgeous titles emerge as winners come the awards ceremony to be held in November at a venue yet to be announced. Old favourites such as Alison Lester's (right) Are We There Yet?(certainly one of the most popular books to enter our household with four under seven) and Where is the Green Sheep? Mem Fox and Judy Horacek are amongst the ten short listed titles in the Picture Story Book category. Amongst others they are up against the delightfully titled Is Your Grandmother a Goanna? by Pamela Allen who has produced an amazing thirty-six picture
books in the last twenty-five
years. Penguin books must be delighted with a lone challenger from Walker Books,Dimity Dumpty by Bob Graham, taking on their line-up of nine titles out of ten in the section - congratulations to them.
In the Fiction for Younger Readers category the Boyz Rule! Series continues it's popularity as does the ever green Andy Griffith (left) with both What Bumosaur is That? (Purple Book) and Just Shocking! amongst the nominees. The Anna Fienberg and Kim Gamble team have maintained their place in young Australian's consciousness with Tashi and the Mixed-up Monster and Tashi and the Stolen Bus making the cut.
The ten finalists in the Fiction for Older Readers category read like a who's who of popular teen authors. It may well be Morris Gleitzman's year with three books nominated,Boy Overboard plus Doubting Thomas and the excellently titled Give Peas a Chance. Other heavyweights include the extraordinary Jackie French with Goat Who Sailed the World (currently unavailable new) and Hitler's Daughter and Emily Rodda's page-turner The Key to Rondo.
O
ne of the many things I like about the YABBA is that they have a section, introduced last year I believe, for that very important transitional age of 7-9 years. The increasingly sophisticated tastes of this age group are demonstrated by a number of the short listed titles. Matthew Reilly continues to build his following and is fast becoming one of the nations most successful ever young authors. He dominates this category with a spectacular four titles nominated, Hover Car Racer- Contest - Ice Station and Scarecrow. Mr. Reilly might not have it all his own way though with Carole Wilkinsons delightful Dragon Moon (published by those champions of aussie children's books Black Dog) and the exquisite Mao's Last Dance Mao's Last Dancer Li Cunxin also in the mix.
note: my thanks to Amanda from the YABBAS for straightening out a few details for me.... a formidable store of knowledge some people have.
note: SEEK Books has a page dedicated to the most recent winners if you wish to check out prices etc. Go to SEEK Books YABBA page>>.
